COMPANY HANDBOOK
INTRODUCTION
The following is a guide to Festival policies this season, as well as a collection of "survival" information about Boulder. Our goal is to produce the finest theatre possible. In order to do this we expect each company member to exercise and display the highest in professional artistic standards and to function as an active member of the company ensemble.
GENERAL GUIDELINES
1. Each company member is responsible to the schedule set by the Festival and should be prepared for work at the beginning of each call. Since the daily schedule is subject to change, please check the callboard daily. Callboard locations are: UT Theatre, Townhouse Laundry Room, SM Office & Hellems Dressing Rooms.
2. Actors are responsible to their director during each rehearsal call and should not leave a rehearsal area without checking with the Stage Manager. Actors are responsible to the Stage Manager during all performances.
3. Technicians and other company members are responsible to the respective supervisor or director of their area during the build period. They are responsible to the Stage Manager during all performances.
4. Guests are not allowed in the dressing rooms or backstage before, during, or after a performance. You can arrange to meet them in front of the theatre after you are finished for the evening.
5. Unless hired by the Festival, children are not allowed in the shops or offices of the Festival without permission from a supervisor.
6. All props and costumes purchased or prepared by the Festival are the property of the Festival and should not be considered souvenirs or mementos, nor may they be altered without the knowledge and approval of the designer, shop supervisor, the SM, and the production manager.
7. Campus/Building rules: (please be conscientious about observing them)
a. Smoking is not permitted in any university building. Also, there is no smoking backstage or in the auditorium at the Rippon. (For purposes of the Safety Office, the Rippon is run as if it is an indoor space).
b. No food or drinks (except water) are allowed in the mainstage theatre.
c. The loading dock/handicap access area must remain clear of vehicles. This is the emergency
vehicle/fire truck access. Loading and unloading is allowed as long as the vehicle is not left unattended. Parking Management will tow unattended vehicles.
d. Signs and other material may be posted only on doors, doorframes or the room number
placards (use scotch tape) or on the callboards (use thumbtacks). DO NOT post anything on the
walls. Commercial materials may not be posted anywhere in the building.
e. No bicycles are allowed in the buildings. There are bicycle racks adjacent to both theatres.
Also, roller blades cannot be used in any building.
f. No pets are allowed in the theatre, shop, or rehearsal spaces unless they are an official part of the company.
g. Hallways and stairwells may not be used for storage.
h. Liquor is not permitted in public areas on campus unless an activity permit has been arranged for in advance.
8. The Festival encourages every company member to eat and sleep properly. Those living at the townhouse complex are expected to be conscious of the varied work hours of the company members and observe quiet time hours (11pm-8am).
9. Ticket policy: Each full company member will receive 10 vouchers, each of which can be exchanged at the box office for a complimentary ticket. We suggest you redeem these early to guarantee seats. In addition, company members can see any performance free on a rush basis if there are unsold seats in the house. (See the House Manager five minutes before curtain.) Everyone in the theatre must have a ticket stub or be accounted for by the House Manager or you will be asked to leave. We do sell standing room, so you cannot just assume you can stand in the back of the theatre. The box office is located in the basement of the UT Theatre.
l0. Company vehicles are provided for company business and are driven by authorized drivers only. The van checkout form is located in the technical area by the TD's office. All mileage must be recorded. Keys to all vehicles may be checked out from Steven McDonald.
11. Keys: Those issued keys must leave a deposit, which will be refunded when your keys are returned.
12. When working late at night, use the buddy system and keep doors locked.
13. The official company day off during the summer is Monday (Sunday for some of the production shops) . Each shop will determine its specific work hours, and the stage managers will post specific rehearsal calls. The full time workload for most company members is expected to be 48-54 hours per week.
COMMUNICATION PROCEDURES
1. Check the callboard daily. The main callboard is located adjacent to the Mainstage. Each day the Stage Manager will post a Daily Schedule with up-dated, detailed information about the day's activities and a costume-fitting list. In addition, the Stage Managers will post a daily call for each show with specific rehearsal information. Copies of these calls will also be posted at the townhouses, as well as online, as a convenience, but you should also check the main callboard daily for additional updates and information. When we begin performances, a callboard will be established in Hellems.
2. In addition, each company member will either have a mailbox or a folder for mail and messages. Those folders for technicians will be located in each shop, while those for the actors, directors, and other personnel will be located in the Production Office. Each company member should check for mail and messages at least once per day. The mail comes in Mon-Fri about 3pm.
3. There will be a daily Stage Manager Report, which will contain information about changes and additions for each show. These reports will be distributed to the technical and management staff via e-mail.
ACTORS
1. A personal vocal/movement warm-up is encouraged for all actors. Company vocal classes and individual voice/speech tutorials may be scheduled.
2. In addition to the regular rehearsals, there may be voice coaching sessions; combat, singing, and choreography rehearsals; publicity calls; and work sessions with the dramaturgs and ADs scheduled. These will be posted on the CSF daily schedule. Whenever possible, these will be scheduled within the existing rehearsal blocks.
3. Actors (male and female) may not cut their hair or shave off existing beards or moustaches without prior permission from the Costume Director. Hairstyles for all performers will be designed and cut or styled to suit the needs of the Festival. If you have a beard, you may be asked to shave.
5. The costume shop will provide a list of procedures to follow for costume care when dress rehearsals begin.
6. Under no circumstances are you to receive guests or leave the theatre in any part of your costume or makeup.
7. Understudies will be assigned around the time rehearsals begin. Understudies are expected to know their lines and blocking by the opening of the shows through observing rehearsals. All actors (except Equity) and the running crew will be called to this rehearsal. Additional understudy rehearsals may be scheduled in the event an understudy is required to go on.
8. Brush-up rehearsals will be scheduled as needed by the SMs after the shows are open.
9. There is no smoking, eating, or drinking (except water) in costumes.
10. Fines may be imposed for lateness to rehearsals and costume fittings.
TECHNICIANS
1. Technicians report to their shop at the time designated by their supervisor. Although they may have a primary work assignment, they may be shifted to accommodate the needs of the festival or the particular shop as production demands adjust.
2. CSF has made a commitment to safety. Sometimes working safely may seem inconvenient or may require learning to work in a new way, but safety for the most part is a matter of common sense. All technicians are expected to work in a safe manner at all times: protect yourself and others.
a. Fine dust requires a particle mask. Fumes or mist in the air requires a respirator. If you need to use a respirator to safely do the work, then those in the same space need to also. No use of hazardous materials allowed in unventilated spaces: use only in the paint booth or outside.
b. Loud or continuous noise requires ear protection.
c. Any activity, which can throw stuff into the air, requires eye protection.
d. Gloves and other protective clothing should be worn when common sense dictates.
e. Climbing harness must be worn when working in the air.
f. Appropriate clothing and shoes will be worn at all times. Long hair needs to be tied back while
working in the shops or on stage.
g. The use of the shops is limited to company members working on the season's shows.
h. The correct use of safety equipment and tools requires special training. Please make sure that you have this training before using equipment. If ever you have questions or need training please ask your supervisor.
3. The outside of the building does not belong to us. If you paint outside, you must protect the concrete, flagstone, brick, etc.
4. All company members are expected to maintain a quiet, disciplined professional manner backstage.
5. Wear dark clothes and soft-soled shoes backstage.
6. Technicians assigned as running crew should plan to see a run through of that show before tech rehearsals begin. The SMs will post a notice of all run throughs on the callboard, and they will be noted on the Daily Schedule. Running crew may also be called for understudy rehearsals.
7. Radio volume must be kept at a low level in the Rippon Mon-Fri 8am-5pm in deference to the classes and staff working in Hellems. Sound for show rehearsals must abide by this timetable as well.
STRIKE
Everyone in the company on contracts during the run (except the Equity Guest Artists) will participate in strike, unless exempted by the Production Manager or Producting Artistic Director. This will be scheduled during the final week of the festival following the closings of productions.

Basic information about the Company Townhouses.
l. Managers: The CSF Company Manager is available for roommate-related and maintenance problems. A vacuum, broom, and mop may be checked out through the Company Manager. The Townhouse manager may enter your apartment at any time without any prior notice (other than knocking).
2. Parking: Townhouse parking is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Spaces are NOT assigned. The parking lot is located on llth St., behind the complex. Street parking is also available.
3. Laundry: There are six washers and six dryers in the laundry room, which is located on the south side of the complex on the first floor. The laundry room is open 24 hours a day. Any problems with the machines should be addressed to the company that owns the machines. Their phone number is in the laundry room. Please do not bring these problems to the Manager.
4. Services: Water, garbage, and electricity are paid for. You are responsible for telephone. TV cable service is provided. TV sets are not provided except to equity members
.
5. Pool: The pool hours are extended for us during the summer to midnight (2:00 am on Saturday night). However, if late night pool use becomes a problem, hours will be restricted. It is your responsibility to help keep the pool area clean. If you are using the pool after 10:00 pm, you must keep noise to a minimum (this means no yelling, screaming, laughing or loud talking).
6. General Noise: Noise in a complex such as this is always a concern. Due to the wide variety of different work schedules assumed by different departments of the Festival, certain unwritten rules of courtesy need to be observed in order that all company members can have sufficient time in the 24-hour day for both relaxation and sleep. We have established 11:00pm-8:00am as "quiet time" in the complex. Please keep parties and conversation within your apartment, with the front door and sliding door closed, during those times. In addition, it is suggested that anyone having difficulty sleeping buy earplugs--there is no way that complete quiet is possible given the structure of the townhouse complex. Take responsibility for protecting yourselves. If you have a concern about noise from either company or non-company members, please see the Company Manager.
7. BBQ-ing: Forbidden on the Townhouse balconies--you may barbeque in the parking lot only. This is a Boulder city ordinance, which is being enforced by the townhouse's insurance company. Sorry. We do have a "company barbeque" located in the courtyard--just make sure you clean up after yourselves.
8. Security: Keep your apartment locked and use the "buddy system" when walking at night. If you have any problems, call the police (911) and please report all incidents to the Company Manager.
9. Balconies must be kept clear of trash, re-cycling, bicycles, etc. The following are prohibited from the balconies at all time: hammocks, garbage containers, furniture from inside your apartment, kegs, trash, and (once again) barbecue grills. Unauthorized items will be removed by the Townhouse management. Additionally, the area under your balcony is also your responsibility. Do not throw bottles, cigarette butts, trash, paper, etc. off your balcony. You will be charged for any resulting clean up.
10. There are two dumpsters in the parking lot. Do not stack your trash or garbage in the walkways; take it directly to the dumpster.
11. PLEASE BE ENERGY EFFICIENT—turn of lights, TVs, etc. when you leave your apartment.
A little common sense in your dealings with each other and with your living spaces will make the summer go much more smoothly and will guarantee our welcome back to Varsity Townhouses next year.
INJURIES AND ILLNESS
1. All work related injuries and illnesses for contracted company members are covered by workman's compensation. Following medical attention, it is important that you fill out a workman's comp form from the Production Manager, Production Stage Manager, or Operations Manager. GENERAL INFORMATION AND SERVICES
l. High Altitude
a. Be conservative with your pace. It is easier to get into oxygen debt at high altitude, and recovery takes longer. The more fit you are when you move to a higher altitude, the less time it takes to adapt. The reverse is also true.
b. Stay hydrated. The dry air here may fool you into thinking that you are not losing fluid through
perspiration.
c. Protect yourself from the sun. The thinner atmosphere at higher altitudes provides less protection from ultraviolet rays.
2. Transportation
a. RTD--The bus can take you anywhere in Boulder and Denver. Just call 778-6000 or 777-3343 on weekdays before l0pm. Tell them your destination, the time you need to be there, and where you are, and they will tell you which bus to take. You may also check the travel planner at rtd-denver.com. Printed schedules are available at the downtown station, l4th and Walnut. . There are also the Hop, Skip, and Jump buses which can get you around town for shopping.
b. Biking is best in Boulder. Bike theft is high: ALWAYS lock your bike, INCLUDING your bike seat! Fines are stiff and are generously handed out for riding in a campus dismount area, on a commercial sidewalk, at night without a light, or not stopping at stop signs. Bikes cannot be stored in the Rippon.
3. Banking/Check-cashing
a. Paychecks may be cashed at Wells Fargo Bank at l3th and Pearl. There is another branch, which is open on Saturday mornings at l7th and Canyon (drive-up). In order to cash the checks, you will need a picture ID and a CSF ID card, which you will get at registration. In addition, you may cash a personal check for up to $50 if co-signed by Ray Kemble, the Business Manager.
b. Checks can also be cashed, with the same ID, at the CU Bookstore for $15 over the cost of merchandise.
c. It is possible to open an account at the Elevations Credit Union, which has an office in the UMC. It requires a $5 deposit and has no service charge. People would need to bring over a copy of their CSF ID card.
